Saraswati is the name of a Hindu goddess of knowledge, music, and the arts. Her name means “possessing water” or “she with many pools” from Sanskrit saras (fluid, water, lake) which comes from Proto-Indo-Iranian sáras ~ sálas (marsh, water) derived from Proto-Indo-European *sélos~*séles (marsh) and vati (having). I’ve also seen it listed as coming from Sanskrit sāra meaning “essence” and sva (self, one self) so essentially meaning “essence of one self”. She is the consort of Brahma and was originally the personification of the River Saraswati. Apparently the correct translation of the name is Sarasvati with a v.
