Wendell

Wendell is an English surname derived from given name Wendela short form of Germanic names beginning with wandal meaning “Vandal”, referring to a Germanic tribe who invaded Spain and North Africa. Though the etymology of the name is uncertain, it has been linked to Germanic *wandern meaning “to wander” deriving from Proto-Germanic *windaną meaning “to wind, to wrap” from Proto-Indo-European *wendʰ- (to wind, to turn). I’ve also seen it linked to Proto-Celtic *windos (white). Wendel is also a German word meaning “spiral, coil, helix”.

Nicknames: Wen, Dell

Origin: Proto-Indo-European, Proto-Celtic
