Zane is an English surname of unknown meaning though there have been attempts to link it as a shortened form of Zanelli and Zanetti, both Italian surnames deriving from the given name Zani which is the Italian form of John, the English form of Iohannes, the Latin form of Greek Ioannes from Hebrew Yochana meaning “Yahweh is gracious”. Other possible origins include:

  • it may have derived as an anglicized form of Zahn, a German and Jewish surname meaning “tooth, fang” likely derived as a nickname for someone who had a large tooth. It comes from Old High German zan, zand (tooth) from Proto-Germanic *tanþs from Proto-Indo-European *h₃dónts (tooth);
  • it could also have started out from Anglo-Saxon personal name Sæwine meaning “sea friend” which somehow became shortened to Zane;
  • Zane (pr. zah-na; Forvo) is also a Latvian female name, the Latvian form of Zuzanna, the Polish and Latvian form of Susanna which comes from Hebrew Shoshannah which means “lily”; it also means “rose” in modern Hebrew. It may ultimately be derived from Egyptian sšn meaning “lotus”;
  • Zane could also be a variant spelling of Zain, an Arabic unisex name meaning “beauty, handsome, grace, adornment”.
