Jupiter is the name of the chief god of Roman mythology and the Roman counterpart of Zeus in Greek myth, as well as the name of a planet named after him. Traditonally a male name, it has been used as a female name for the 2015 sci-fi film Jupiter Ascending. Does that automatically make it a unisex name? Perhaps not, but I did use it for a female character years before the movie came out and who’s to say future generations wouldn’t be inspired by the movie or the character. The name Jupiter is the anglicized form of Latin Iuppiter which derives from Proto-Indo-European *Dyeu-pater meaning “god father” or “sky father” or essentially “father Jove”; made up from PIE elements *dyḗws (sky, heaven; sky god) derived from PIE root *dyew- (to be bright; sky, heaven); and *ph₂tḗr (father).
