Astra is a female given name meaning “star” which comes from Latin astrum via Ancient Greek astron which ultimately derives from a PIE root word. In Hindu mythology, an astra refers to a supernatural weapon controlled by a god and which later came to mean any weapon that was released from one’s hand (arrow, spear, sword, etc.)
