Ismay

Ismay is a female given name which comes from an English surname of uncertain etymology. It could have originated from Old German Ismagin meaning “iron-strength” though the first element could also be related to Old High German īs meaning “ice”. Ismay could also be a variant of Ismenia or Ismene, an Ancient Greek female name possibly meaning “knowledge”; in Greek mythology, Ismene is the daughter of Oedipus and the sister of Antigone. Ismay could also be a variant spelling of Esmé, Esmée (Esme) meaning “esteemed, loved” from Old French esmer (to esteem) which ultimately derives from a PIE root word.
