Pepper is the name of a spice belonging to the genus Piper which comes from Ancient Greek péperi (pepper; black pepper) via an Indo-Aryan source. It’s similar to Sanskrit pippali (long pepper). Pepper is often used as a nickname instead of an actual name and is also an English and North German surname which originated as an occupational name for someone who sold spices or peppers. Pepper is also a verb in English, referring to something one seasons with or sprinkles or covers with; to add something with; to strike or hit rapidly with.
