Memphis

Memphis is the name of an ancient city in Egypt, the Greek form of Egyptian mn-nfr (which became Menfe in Coptic). It means “enduring and beautiful” made up from Egyptian mn (to endure) and nfr(w) (beauty; perfection”). Memphis is also the name of a nymph in Greek mythology, the daughter of the river Nile for which the city of Memphis was named after her.

As well as being the name of an ancient city in Egypt, it’s also the name of a city in Tennessee.

Origin: Egyptian
