Titan is an English word referring to something gigantic in size or power, something or someone that stands out for greatness of achievement, and from which the word titanic originates from. The word comes from Greek mythology, in which the Titans were giant deities who preceded the Olympian gods and were later overthrown by them. The origin of the name is uncertain. Some theories as to its meaning are títo (sun, day) via an Anatolian loan-word, or titaínō (to stretch, to extend) derived from a PIE root word; or tísis meaning “retribution; vengeance”.
