Remora is the name of a fish in the family Echeneidae, also known as suckerfish, because they attach themselves to other fish (such as sharks and turtles) and boats. Remora comes from Latin meaning “delay, hindrance”, made up of prefix re- (back, backwards) and mora (delay). The remora actually got their name in the belief that their attaching themselves to the boats slowed them down.

Nicknames: Rem, Remmie/Remmy, Mora

Origin: Proto-Indo-European
