Miltiades is an Ancient Greek male name, belonging to several men in history, including an Athenian general responsible for the defeat of the Persians in the Battle of Marathon. It comes from Ancient Greek miltos meaning “red earth” (which seems to be derived from a pre-Greek origin) combined with the patronymic suffix ides. The name is pronounced as mil-ty-a-dis, mil-ty-a-dees or mil-tee-a-dis.
Interestingly enough, the first time I came across this name was on an animated show called RWBY, the name of a female character nicknamed Militia. The interesting thing about this show is that the names of the characters (either first or last) tended to be based on colors.
Origin: likely pre-Greek
