Cairo is the name of the capital city of Egypt. It comes from Arabic al-qahira اَلْقَاهِرَة meaning “the victorious”, which seems to have received its name from the medieval Arabic name of the planet Marsal-Najm al-Qāhir (النجم القاهر‎), or “the conquering star”, apparently because it was visible above the city at the time of its founding.
