Luther

Luther is a male name which comes from a surname of two possible origins and etymologies:

  • as a German surname, it derives from Germanic given name Leuthar, made up of Germanic elements liut (people) and heri, hari (army), essentially meaning “people’s army” or “army people”;
  • as an English surname it comes from Middle English luthier “lute maker” via French  luthier via luth (lute) which seems to be borrowed from Old Occitan laüt deriving from Arabic al-ʿūd اَلْعُود (the wood)
