Cortez

Cortez is an anglicized form of Cortéz, a Spanish surname which comes from cortés meaning “courteous, polite” via Latin court (court), which derives from a PIE root word. It may have originated as a nickname for someone who was courteous or had nice manners (though it may also have originated as an ironic nickname for someone who was the complete opposite), or it could have risen up as a locational name for someone who came from any of various places called Cortes.
